Magnetic Particle Inspection is a non-destructive testing methodology to detect cracks on the surface and sub-surface of ferromagnetic materials by inducing magnetic field in the material. MPI is very popular in the automobile, steel, weld, casting & in-service inspection industries. They are relatively cheaper than eddy current testing and can be easily adapted to complex geometrical profiles. MPI may be used directly at the manufacturing sites or for in-site inspection of installed assets.
To induce the magnetic field, the inspector uses a yoke. Yokes may be either permanent magnets or have the capability to induce the magnetic field by passing a current through coils.
