Non-Destructive Nodularity Testing can be done with advanced ultrasonic instrument which is capable of measuring sound velocity. For dedicated nodularity measurement, “EECI” make Advanscan AS-414 provides direct readout of Nodularity percentage in cast iron and other materials based on an entered thickness.
With the instrument calibrated for an appropriate frequency transducer, obtain a backwall echo from a section of known thickness, which will display the percent Nodularity based on the detected echoes.
The Advanscan AS-414 is constructed to combine simple to use menu based architecture for setting up software, hardware & calibration settings. It also provides direct access to main/critical inspection settings such as Gain, Freeze, Zoom, Parameter display & Frame save. It provides unique menu based design at the base of the screen and respective sub-menus vertically on right side of the screen, making it easier for the user to navigate. It’s useful for Immersion Applications. The Nodularity software comes with this machine.
There is a consistent difference in sound velocity between pure iron, nodular cast iron and gray cast iron. Typically, pure elemental iron has a sound velocity of approximately 5.9 mm/μs, nodular iron has a sound velocity of approximately 5.6 mm/μs and gray iron has a sound velocity of approximately 4.8 mm/μs. Exact velocities for a given application vary depending on alloy composition, grain structure, and other process variables. Exact velocities should always be verified on calibration standards made from the material to be tested. It is recommended that one should establish their own chart of velocity versus percent of nodularity for each application. It shall be noted that measurement of sound velocity requires that the thickness of the test piece be known.
