TESTING OF ALUMINIUM CASTINGS WITH ADVANCED ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR – AS414

Non-destructive testing using ultrasonic measurement is used to ensure the quality of Aluminium-casting products. The quality of a casting depends on the presence of discontinuities such as porosity and on the final metallurgical structure. Discontinuities occurring in the sub-surface of the cast structure mostly have irregular surfaces which scatter the ultrasound waves and make ultrasonic testing more difficult. Hence use of couplants provides better response. The effective use of ultrasonic testing for inspection of castings depends greatly upon the skills and expertise of the operator.

In the Fig.1, Aluminium part with small contact area examined with Special JP-EEC Pencil type Jutan Transducer – 5Mhz single element and EECI AS-414 Advanced Flaw Detector. Very clear Backwall and low signal to Noise ratio seen.

The electronics has a range of features such as high penetration power mode, low noise levels and high resolution performance, which makes it ideal for this application. The solution helps identify porosity and cracks.

In the Fig.2, EECI Advanscan Ultrasonic Flaw Detector AS-414 with special Transducer 2Mhz is used to check thickness and any laminar cracks in aluminium Cast Base of Ultrasonic Welding machine.
