FOERSTER device : MAGNETOSCOP with Permeability
Special alloys of copper are valuable for their good electrical conductivity and optimal results for processing. Some special alloys possess extreme non-magnetic properties, that are additionally useful for magnetic sensitive applications. To adhere to industry requirements, the relative magnetic permeability of these alloys, is tested during material qualification.
The copper based special alloys like bronze, brass and nickel-silver, next to their attractive electrical properties provide high-end non-magnetic (diamagnetic or paramagnetic) properties. Therefore, they are a particularly interesting for manufacturers of connectors and connecting pins where the end component or facility is expected to be non-magnetic
(e.g. electronic, MRI, watches).
To be qualified for a dedicated application, the relative magnetic permeability (μr) is very often required to be tested with high level of precision. The μr corresponds to the steepness of the hysteresis and describes how good material can be magnetized by an external field H. From the material perspective three value ranges of μr can be defined:
- μr = 1.0 describes non-magnetic material
- μr > 1.0 describes feebly magnetic material
- μr >> 1.0 describes material easy to magnetize
For the above type of special alloys the relative permeability is very close to 1.0 (one). Testing this range of values demands high sensitivity of a measuring system. FOERSTER’s MAGNETOSCOP 1.070 with the permeability probe is a portable device, tailored for high level of precision, thanks to its measuring resolution for μr from 1.00000 to 2.00000. With the new probe, the relative permeability is determined at the 30 kA/m of working point. The device enables fast and simple procedure of measuring raw materials or manufactured components in situation, without specific size or shape preparation of test specimen.
For measuring relative magnetic permeability in the range from 1.00000 to 2.00000 on raw materials or semi-finished components, we recommend to test the MAGNETOSCOP 1.070 with permeability probe.
